The unprocessed root consists of a central rhizome with numerous short "fingers" branching off from it. The outer layer color of the root is brown-yellow, but may be lighter or darker according to its variety. The inner color is a yellow or orange-yellow. The turmeric plant has long, lanceolate leaves, which shoot up from the rhizome to a height of two to three feet.
