The plant is a perennial that prefers damp soil. The main stem is 1 to 3.5 mm thick and consists of 2 to 6 cm long, hollow sections with as few as 6 and as many as 19 raised, longitudinal ridges. The sections are separated by nodes, each of which has a membranaceous leaf sheath with triangular-lanceolate, often brown, teeth. Whorls of needle-like leaves sprout from the nodes.
