The plant is an evergreen tree that grows to 40 feet tall and has aromatic leaves. The clusters of small, yellow flowers will produce fruit for over 60 years. The fruit is picked when ripe and the mace is removed from the outside of the nutmeg and dried separately. The nutmeg is about 1" long and 1/2" in diameter and has a rounded, oblong shape. It is very hard and woody.
