The plant is a deciduous woody shrub with a distinctive lemon fragrance. Its leaves are lanceolate, pointed and between two and four inches long by 1/2 to one inch wide. The edges are slightly toothed or toothless and fringed with hairs. The stalks are short. The leaves occur in whorls of three or four and become very brittle upon drying.
