The plant is a deciduous hardy shrub with 3 to 7 toothed leaflets on each stem. The harvested root usually occurs as cylindrical chunks and big chips. Externally, it is grayish grown and relatively smooth. Internally, it is creamy in color and shows rings of growth. The fracture is tough and fibrous.
