Dong quai, also known as Chinese angelica, is a sturdy, erect perennial growing to six feet high. The cylindrical root is brown on the outside and white on the inside. It is typically 10-25 cm long with vertical wrinkles. The major root is very strong and rather short,1-3 cm long, and 1.5 - 3.0 cm in diameter. Under this part there are two to more than 10 rootlets.
