Burdock is a biennial with stems that grow to five feet and have red-purple flower heads. Its root is very hard, horny, and scarcely fibrous. The external surface is gray-brown to brown-black and longitudinally wrinkled. A cross section shows a white to light brown cortex, a dark cambial zone, a radically striated yellow-brown xylem, and a spongy, frequently torn pith.
