The bay is a small tree that grows in Britain to a height of about 25 feet, but in warmer climates, it may reach as much as 60 feet. The luxurious evergreen leaves are alternate, with short stalks. They are lanceolate, 3-4 inches long with a smooth, wavy margin. They are thick and smooth. The small, yellow flowers are unisexual and the berries are shiny and black.
