The plant is an erect perennial that grows to five feet. The leaves are grayish green and covered with hairs on both surfaces and the stems are wooly. The product consists of the woody taproot, from which the outer bark has been removed by peeling or scraping. The root is almost cylindrical and the outside has scars originating from lateral roots, as well as small detaching groups of bark fibers.
